These Bacon Wrapped Oreos Will Be The First Thing Gone At Your Next Cookout

Bacon wrapped oreos are an amazing snack to try on the smoker.

This recipe has created more fun conversations around my smokers then any other one I’ve produced.  It seems that there are plenty of fans of Oreos as well as bacon out there, so why not bring these two favorites together and create an explosion of flavor and enjoyment for all?

I’ve successfully prepared this recipe on every smoker I own. Here I’m showcasing it on my Traeger Ironwood 885 because of its exceptional performance and versatility. However, rest assured that this recipe works flawlessly on my Traeger Timberlines, Ranger or Tailgater as well.

Ingredients for bacon wrapped Oreos

  • 1 package Traditional Oreos:  After trying many of the different Oreo flavors out there, I’ve found the simple traditional chocolate Oreo with white cream filling is the go-to option for this recipe. 
  • 1 package center cut bacon:  My preference for width, uniformity and thickness is Oscar Mayer center cut bacon.
  • 1 tbsp Smoked Q Rock’s Honey Chipotle Seasoning:  This rub creates a delicious mix of sweet and smoky by infusing huge amounts of granulated honey and mixing it with smoky chipotle flavors.

Instructions for making bacon wrapped Oreos

1. Cut bacon: To get started I remove the center cut bacon from the package and cut it in half.

2. Wrap Oreos: Next I grab each Oreo and wrap the half cut bacon all the way around the cookie, tucking the bacon ends under the cookie before placing them evenly spaced on a cooling rack to easily place and remove from the smoker.

3. Season: I prefer to grab a sweet rub that pairs well with the salty nature of the bacon, so I use my Smoked Q Rock’s Honey Chipotle seasoning.

4. Smoke for 45 minutes: I place these on my Traeger Ironwood 885 at 275º for 45 minutes until the bacon firms up and turns to a delicious reddish color.

5. Stack and serve: After pulling them from the smoker, allow them to cool for 5-10 minutes then stack on a plate to serve to family and friends.

Variations and Substitutions:

Alternate Rubs: I’ve tried savory rubs, spicy rubs and everything in between.  But I’ve found the best meld of flavors comes from a honey-based rub.  And while I love going with my Smoked Q Honey Chipotle rub, a few others I’ve used and enjoy include:

  • Meat Church Honey Hog
  • Heath Riles Honey Rub
  • Kosmos Killer Bee Honey Rub

Substitution or variation: I generally stick to the traditional ingredients, but I have experimented with Golden Oreos, Birthday Cake Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreos, and many others. I’ve also used regular cut bacon, thick cut bacon, or any type that was readily available. While I recommend the ingredients listed in this recipe, feel free to use different ones and give this recipe a try.

Tips and tricks for making this bacon wrapped Oreos

Grab the center cut bacon: I’ve hit on it already, but I’ve had the best results using Oscar Mayer Center cut bacon.  It seems to wrap the best, covers just the right amount of the Oreo, and ends up with the perfect chewy yet firm texture. 

Try some different Oreo flavors: Mix it up.  Grab for the exotic Oreos like Mint, Peanut Butter, Lemon, Birthday Cake or even Golden or Double Stuffed.  I’ve tried many of these options and I’ve had a wide range of responses to the wild flavor combos. 

Keep the cooking temp low: My preference is to run this recipe at 275º.  This temp allows the bacon to slow cook, but still firm up.  When I’ve went at a higher temperature I’ve had the Oreo’s constrict from the bacon squeezing.  I’ve also ran at 225º and it took far too long to get the bacon to finish or get to the right texture.
